I have an original 2G iphone which has been unlocked since I travel overseas frequently. HOwever, I am a legitimate AT&T iphone plan subscriber. My phone needs some fixing before my warranty runs out so I restored it without any trace of it being hacked before. There are some issues with it and needs to go back to the Genius bar and I left it with my husband to get it taken care of since I'm on the road traveling. As a result, I took the SIM card out since I needed the SIM. Can my husband put his SIM card in while he's in the store (he's also on an iphone plan). Would they be able to figure out his SIM doesn't belong to that phone?

If its a 2G and is not jailbroken/unlocked then a different AT&T sim will not work.
It will show you that icon telling you to plug it into itunes.

What about a 3G one?

Will AT&T care that your IMEI is not the last phone you purchased?

Wrong. Every phone of my friends and mine and pretty much anyone I know who has swapped SIM cards of AT&T into different 1st Gen iPhones work without a hitch.

Only happens if you put in a foreign non supported SIM.

I dissagree.
Stick in a different AT&T Sim on the 2G and see what happens.
It will not let you put in any other AT&T sim, in that case you will get an error, that different sim detected, and iPhone will ask for re-activation;

Not to take away from the OP's question, because mine is very similar.

I'm giving my son my old 8G 3G and want to use a PAYG card instead of the upgrade to a Family Plan which will be an extra (at least) $60/mo.. more like $90/mo. Will the PAYG SIM card work this way? (I went through $282 of PAYG updating his phone last night instead of using my SIM card:mad:)
