Hey

Can I use Handbrake to take a .Mov that has an AppleTV Compatible Video Track & DTS Coherant 5.1 Audio Track and Passthrough the Video & 5.1 whilst creating an AAC Stero Track and saving into an Mp4 / M4v container?

This would be very usefull to me if so,

If I cant do it with Handbrake, what about any other App?

Remember I want to keep the Video untouched, the 5.1 untouched and add a Stereo AAC Track into a m4v container!

I think QuicktimePro allows you to do this.

Sorry I missed the 5.1 bit. :eek: All that goes over my head a bit. If I can hear it and its not crap, I'm happy. :D It's the video quality I care about more. :)

What about VisualHub?
 
I agree, Quicktime Pro is brilliant - However, as I mentioned previously! It will not export MP4/M4V with 2 Sound Tracks (AAC & AC3). It will export MP4 with Passthrough Video and Passthrough AAC track but there is no way (I have yet found) to also export the AC3 within the MP4 container through Quicktime, You have to save as a Mov!! :(

I would be intrigued to learn about the 'many programs' you refer to that can passthrough Video + 2 sound tracks (AAC & AC3) into an MP4/M4V container though?

can i ask (to understand more)

• why you need to save it as .mp4/.m4v?? is the MPEG that necessary?
• why do you need video passthrough?

i will get a movie and make the AAC, AC3 and video. i will try to convert using QT Pro, MPEG streamclip, Visual Hub, the FCP audio converter thingy and any other converting programs i can think of. ill see how i go and post back any results for you :)

Certainly!

It must be Mp4/M4v for full compatability with my AppleTV.

I require Video passthrough as I have already spent the time transcoding the source footage into an AppleTV compatible h.264 format therefore I need not transcode it again or quality will be lost as it will have been transcoded twice!

The same applies to the 5.1 AC3 track - This already exists, thats why I only need to pass it through rather than re-create it.

I appreciate your help and look forward to the results of your tests.

lol ok firstly. ill just catch you up with what i am aware of.

1st: :apple:TV can play .mov formatted files. below is taken straight from :apple:TV specs
Video formats supported
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

so from that, it doesnt matter whether you have converted to h.264 or MPEG-4, the :apple:TV will be able to play a .mov file.

i say this only because it could save us both a lot of time, and it would make it a lot easier.

2nd: what would seem an easy option would be to get the original file, and use handbrake (it can now convert pretty much anything), this will allow for the video conversion bitrate of your choice, and multiple (yes) audio soundtracks.

if you still want to stick to your method, ill give it a crack and get back to you :)

Thanks for your reply & thanks for posting the AppleTv specs - I am however already aware of its capabilities.

Yep it can play Mov files but from my experience it has problems with Mov filses and 2 audio tracks!! Always get no sound. From reading around these forums this seems to be a consistant problem?!

I do actually use Handbrake on a regular basis for doing exactly what you describe - But as I mentioned earlier, I have already spent the time (17hours +) transcoding the video into a compatible source and dont want to re do that if I dont have to.

I kinda hoped someone would have had an easy workround to this but it is looking like probably not now :) In hindsight I should have just re-transcoded the footage lol

ok i see your dilemma! that would be a pain in the but not being able to play the formats.

lol maybe re-converting would be the easiest option :p.

i will give an attempt for you, trying to join the audio etc into the file :) give me a while to do it haha, im just in bed ready to sleep haha!!

Ha thanks..

Only try to do it if you can be bothered though. I will try again with the Mov (as I now have upgraded to 2.3) Maybe the bug has been fixed?!

haha im getting right into it.

so far i have 3 separate files. a movie file, an AC3 audio file, and the DTS file. i will try to export them in such a way that they can be compatible in .mp4 / m4v....so yea lol
