Can I use MacBook Air reinstall device on another Mac?

This may be a stupid question, but I was wondering if I could use my new MBA's USB reinstall device to install Snow Leopard on my 2008 iMac? I guess it's both an ethical and practical question. First will it even work and if it does am I allowed to do it? Thanks in advance. Sincerely,
