I recently bought an Iphone 3G and its unlocked. Now, I have ATT but I can drop the whole plan anytime I want and use another phone (I bought the Iphone on ebay, not in the store). The problem is they tell me that even if its unlocked and jailbroken, I can't do that. My question is can I put any regular (ATT)sim card on my Jailbroken/Unlocked Iphone 3G and only pay for the voice plan (NOT THE DATA)?
Thanks

Yes, you can totally do this. Make sure to have data access blocked on your phone (before you put your sim in it, or they wont let you), or use BossPrefs to do it.

yes i second that.
i used to work for the england equivalent of ATT, O2.
the network has no way, techincally, of knowing what handset you are using and don't care either way whether its unlocked etc. just so long as you paying your bills. any sim will work in the 3G, even if it wasn't unlocked/jailbroken (in the uk anyway! because its available on no plan, pay&go). you can turn off data in your system prefs - or have ATT disable it if you dont want hefty bills.

so yeah go ahead! I still have 2G because my call plan is so so cheap. wish i was in your position, i really would like the GPS.

Will these suggestions work in the U.S.??

Hi.

I currently have a unlocked 8GB 2G iPhone (with At&t service) that I have been using since Christmas of 2007 purchased locally off of Craigslist. I have my account blocked from data usage from At&t. I have never had any data usage charges.

I have read about people using the cheaper non iPhone plans and getting the txt and or emails about an incompatible data plan on their line. BUT I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ONE of those. (I am assuming it is because I am not using any data or have a "incompatible" plan.) However, when I look at my account online, my devices show my 2G iPhone. I do speak with customer service quite frequently and have never had anyone even mention to me about needing to have any data plan.

I enjoy it primarily for the phone but the iPod functions and games are great. Its just simply more convienent to have all 3 tied up in one very nice touch screen package! I use Wi Fi at home or if im around it, but its a convience NOT an requirement or necessity.

I currently have only 521 MB left for music or apps. I want to upgrade to a 16GB which of course is 3G. Can I do the same with that one or is it somehow different that wont function or wont allow it to work like I have been using my current one??....

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, not all AT&T and O2 reps are as misinformed as you.

AT&T can quite easily tell what handset you're using, as can any GSM carrier.

You can do this, but you're running the risk of being caught. AT&T do frequent checks for Apple TACs on non-iPhone plans, and if they catch you they can add the data plan onto your account automatically. Whether or not you choose to take that risk is up to you -- it might be worth a few bucks for you to gamble that you won't be audited, or it might not.

You cannot remove the data plan from an iPhone 3G.

You can lie to AT&T to get them to drop it, but they will see you using an iPhone on their network and they will add it to your bill again.

ive been using my iphone without the data plan for 3 months now. What I do is the I switch between the iphone and the prepaid nokia phone depending on my needs. I also make sure that i put my sim in the nokia phone 2 days before my next billing cycle until my next bill is genarated.
