Can I use my iPhone 3GS on my o2 iPhone contract?

I'm going back to the UK from the US and want to use my iPhone 3GS (locked to AT&T) on o2 (official iphone contract), and don't want to deal with unlocks and jailbreaking.

1. I heard that o2 are unlocking phones on November 10. ? If I unlock with blacksn0w and then put my official o2 iPhone sim card in, and try to official unlock, will this work and leave me with a permanent official unlock? I know this is done by IMEI number, so this could work right?

2. Could I somehow make my phone unfixable, take it to an Apple store in the UK and hope they give me a replacement which is locked to o2 instead? How could I do this? Meaning making the phone invulnerable to restoring.

Any other, more reliable options, or suggestions?

Breaking a phone that you bought knowing it was locked to get a free replacement? Don't do this.

I don't know how you'd manage it anyway.

Don't do it!

Not only would it be attempted fraud but you have no chance of getting a replacement even if you could successfully nobble your iPhone.

Apple's warranty only covers the iPhone for the country in which it was officially sold. In the Bullring Apple Store, there is a notice on the Genius Bar stating that they will not help you with imported iPhones, even if you are prepared to pay for the work.

You have either got to jailbreak and unlock or sell it on eBay and buy a UK iPhone.
