Can I Use My Iphone In Italy?

I am going to Italy for a month & would like to use my iPhone for everything. AT&T international plan is too expensive. Can I purchase a new SIMS card when I get to Italy & will it allow me to use all of the Apps on my phone? Will my phone number change? Should I try to purchase the SIMS card here before I go? Thanks for your help.

When I went to France/Italy, they were selling SIM cards (Not SIMS) at the airport.

I have no idea about how well they work, or if they require a new phone number thru local carrier.

I do know that AT&T World Traveler is the best international plan (as I have been told). Not sure what the monthly fee is or the per minute fee for Italy.
