Target display mode was only available on the older non-retina 27" iMac.

Yes, but: To use it as a monitor, you need to open it up, rip the guts out (except for the screen), and install some new hardware. Is this what you have in mind? Not for the faint hearted .

Exactly. It is a red herring for your hardware.

Your Retina iMac does not support Target Display Mode. It does not have the capability to serve as display via DisplayPort or HDMI. That's independent of which Mac or other computer you are trying to connect.

It seems like it should work, but on the web page it does not list "Mac mini + iMac":
