Can I use non—ECC DDR3 1333MHz ram in a 5,1

I’ve seen a whole list of conflicting answers and I wanted to clear the air. I just picked up some HyperX blu DDR3 1333MHz non-ECC ram from a friend for super cheap and I want to confirm that they do work in my Mac Pro 5,1, I’m out of town so I’m not able to test right now but I’m looking for a definitive answer.

I used mushkin non ecc ram with an i7 980x cpu in my 5,1..... worked fantastic.

you don't tell us what CPU you are using, but someone else may be able to chime in on a XEON

What are you doing with your Mac Pro?

If you are casual users, and you run software that does not depend on ECC, you will be fine.

(Most of the day to day software people are using does not need ECC).

I was thinking this was a prerequisite for Mac Pro ram so from what you’re saying I’m supposing it’s not.

But to add, no I don’t ever think I’d be using ECC in the foreseeable future.

Nope. Error correction code memory was put in the Mac Pro, so that "pros" who use such programs that depend on it can benefit from it. Apple wanted the Mac Pro to be real pro machine.

But for everything else, non ECC RAM is completely fine..

Alright, thanks for clearing the air, I heard other places that you need ECC RAM for it to be recognized by the Mac Pro so thanks for clarifying.
