In my head.
Hello,

I am working on an app which involves some youtube videos. these videos are mostly historical footage. Can I use them or do I need to obtain any sort of copyrights? Maybe I can simply source them in the about section.

Thanks for advice.

I'd be very wary of anything that's potentially copyrighted. Just because it's on YouTube doesn't mean it's free to use.

If you are including them with the application bundle then you are redistributing them and would need to license them from the copyright holders. If you are simply streaming them off YouTube then that should be OK as you are not distributing the copyrighted material. Of course in the latter case you have to be wary as the movies could get removed from YouTube at any time.

But the materials in question is historical footage and would be rather difficult do obtain copyrights. Really don't know where to even start. These are like old tvfootage.

1) You would not be obtaining the copyright, rather licensing it

2) Difficulty makes no difference. The law does not care about how hard it is for you to find the copyright holder.

3) If you don't do this properly you could end up being sued by the copyright holders for more money than you will ever have and ending up poor and destitute for the rest of your life

Why not post links to the videos in question and see if anyone has advice on how you would go about licensing the video.

Thanks for your input. I will do my best to get all the permissions.

Just be aware that you'll need to actually get permission, not just do your best to get permission.

Of course, the best way to track down the copyright holder would be to use the footage regardless and see whose name appears on the lawsuit!
