I was just wondering if tethering of the iPhone's data is possible? I skipped out on the original iPhone because I use ATT's 3G data as my sole connection to the internet when I'm out of the house. Since the original iPhone did not not have 3G capabilities, I opted out and kept my Tilt/Kaiser because of it's 3G capabilities.

I'm looking forward to the new iPhone, but I have heard or read nothing about it being used as a 3G modem or if it can be tethered to a notebook for data connection. If anyone has any information or input on the matter, it would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

They have not said a thing about it so, I assume you can't. It really stinks since that would be the sole reason for 3G for me. Otherwise, I'll stick with the cheaper data plan.

They are NOT enabling the iPhone to use as a 3G modem with an attached computer? There goes one of the major reasons for me to get one...

Maybe it'll be different when the iPhone is released here in Canada. But Rogers, the carrier, has released no details of their iPhone plans, or costs. I remain suspicious.

You can do this with ANY PHONE THAT HAS DATA, and turn your phone into a dialup internet
http://www.freedialup.org/site/ gives you free #'s to use to make data transfers for slower internet. Verizon users are lucky since 9 PM and later is free data transfers.

Though officially I can not tell.

edit - though alot of phones I have had, you just have to go up to a AT&T store and tell them you will be using the phone as a modem and they will help you out (and set it up)

it's possible

He guys,

I'm not going to post any links (I haven't thoroughly read the rules :D ), but you should know that it is possible. I just found the solution and I'm going to check it out tonight with my iphone and macbook pro.

Meanwhile you can search google for word "tethering"

Update: confirmed, it works :D
