Can iPhone 3GS be activated through iTunes with unofficial carrier?

I have a new 3GS that's factory unlocked.
My carrier is not supported but I didn't want to jailbreak the iPhone so it got unlocked in iTunes and it's been waiting for activation since Saturday.
You think it's because i'm on an unofficial carrier? or it doesn't matter?
