So the only way i can think of doing this is through blacksn0w and just putting in the the chip they use in india which is vodafone.

Does anyone know anyway of doing this

If you jailbreak the phone and then unlock it, you can put any GSM sim in it and it will work.

Well, you can't really just go out an buy an iPhone 3GS as you would need to sign a 2yr contract. Unless you were only going to be in India for about a month or less. :)

However, if you were able to buy one for the extra money with no contract or purchased one off eBay, etc, then you could jailbreak, then unlock it and use a local SIM from India.

Or, most big cities in US have Craigslist. Lots of 3GS iPhones for sale there, that is where I bought both my 3GS's in the last couple of weeks.

do they require you to have a contract now? when i bought my iphone 2g a year and a half ago, i was able to just purchase the phone no questions asked, unlock it and put it on t-mobile without a hitch

I was thinking of the same thing earlier but dropped the idea because If you buy an iPhone you need to have 2 year contract with AT&T and if you buy it unlocked( from ebay or craigslist or AT&T) you'll pay around $700-$800 which is the same price as in india( $700 = around Rs 32,000) and you can buy one from vodafone or airtel for that same price. Why buy an iphone from US, unlocking it and voiding the warranty when you can buy one for the same price in India and get the warranty?

If you are going for a short period of time then you can unlock it and use it without any problems :)

Cheers.:)
