Can iPhone text messages be hacked?

The special "Messages" (blue) that are sent between iOS (and Mac) users are supposed to be encrypted end-to-end, the way I understand it. That should mean a hacker would have to beat the encryption or hack the account itself.
SMS messages (green) don't have any special hack-proofing security when they're traveling through the air...I think.

If someone has access to your phone then they can have access to your messages.

I would stick to not doing anything that you don't want someone else to see. Just saying.

Aren't many things that we do on our devices or even in life basically things we don't want someone else to see. Like just personal communication, or banking, or all kinds of other normal everyday things, yet things that are still basically private or just limited to those specifically participating in them.
