I'm currently hoping for a release of a more suitable application to use the iPad as a portfolio, but as far as using the built in photo application, does it only allow viewing of "optimized"(i.e down sampled/compressed) photos? I'm working with a 5dII so it's sort of important to be able to zoom in to see the true detail, I don't really care if it loads or scrolls slower.

Can iPhoto for ipad view full resolution files?

I seem to recall being able to zoom and pan photos in the photos app on my iPad. I've only brought photos down from Mobile Me using the Gallery app so they might get downsampled there. I would assume if you browsed to a high resolution photo, ie at flickr and saved it to the local photos "camera roll" on the iPad, you would get the full resolution image. What is a 5dii? A DSLR? You don't need a dslr any more to get huge images. Even point and shoots are pushing 12 megapixels, albeit with 1 megapixel capable optics.
I have a lot of big raw files that were 'optomized' for ipad. Look beautiful but I know (because of the file size) they have been compressed. So..AFAIK...iTunes compresses them.
I have emailed a full size pic but gmail had a fit over a 35 meg download <sigh> sometimes it works..sometimes it doesn't.
The big 'we just don't know' is how the camera adapter kit will work. If I connect to my 5D will it download the raw files 'as is' ? Once loaded on iPad (w/o being compressed) how will the performance be? Sluggish? What about emailing them?

yeah they are 21mp images, but it's also to due with the sharpness and clarity you get at 100% magnification I'd like to show off.

I'm getting my pad today I guess I'll have to test it out. The low compression jpegs are about 2-4 MB a piece, and the way itunes optimizes them pushes them down to about 200-300kb. I bet that optimization will happen on the device itself if you download them directly onto it.

iTunes "optimizes" the files... I have no clue what that means... I uploaded 1800px max images to it, and it appears to not have shrunk the images size wise... it may have compressed them though.. dunno. All in all the pictures look amazing on it. I used it as a digital portfolio the other day at a meet and greet and it was received very well 
I just wanted to add that I figured out a pretty easy way of getting the full sized images into photos. I have Goodreader(99cents) which also works as a photo viewer but loads a little slower. But anyways I can just drag and drop the photos into goodreader and then when I go into the goodreader app I can import them although only one at a time. Photos seems to load a low resolution copy while your quickly scrolling threw but if you wait or start zooming in the image comes in clear. much better quality. Now I just need to figure out how to make albums from within photos...
