i am thinking to buy an iPhone, since i am with T-Mobile now, so i have to hack it to use. But i also want to switch to AT&T when the my T-Mobile contract expire, so my question is, once iPhone is jailbroken, can you restore it so it can be used on AT&T's network too, or it's a one-way ticket? thanks in advance~

Unlocking is using it with anyone other than ATT.

so let me use the right terminology, if i unlock my iPhone to use on other carriers like T-Mobile, then can i relock it when i decide to go with AT&T? and when new firmware release from Apple, can u update ur unlocked iPhone on iTunes? since i heard some people's iPhone somehow turned into bricks.
and also, does jailbreak have the same risk as unlock has? thanks again.

I rather think it is you that needs to get off the horse here. Proper terminology is essential for tech support on anything, but most especially computer related items. If he asks about unlocking, but means jailbreaking how many proper responses do you expect him to get? Same as if he asks about jailbreaking, but really wants unlocking.

there has been rumors of genii turning away customers that did not activate their phones with AT&T within two weeks of purchase so you may be putting your applecare warranty at risk by doing this.
If you plan to upgrade to the latest firmware and you already have AT&T, you can just do a "restore to upgrade to the latest firmware". Your phone is now locked and can only use the AT&T Simcard. Now in the future if you want to use a different carrier like Tmobile, youre going to have unlock it again w/c I recommend using Ziphone if your using windows and Independence for Mac users
