Can Maps be configured to serve as a GPS?

Is there a way to configure Maps to simply show the streets/roads ahead while driving without entering a destination? That would be very handy when looking for specific streets that precede a turn, etc.

Are you asking about iOS Maps from Apple? If so, I do that right now in a CarPlay enabled car. It suggests my standard daily commute and I cancel that and then I'm looking at just the streets and my location on the street at any given time/location.

Tony, thanks for your response. I don't have CarPlay, so that's out for me. I would like to use IOS Maps from Apple in much the same manner as a GPS device, e.g., Garmin, simply shows the road ahead, cross streets, etc. I've tried to set a destination "down the road" then simply follow my own route independent of the route the app chooses for me, but that's a non-starter. Suggestions?

Get a real navigation app. Every real navigation app has both a Head-Up display mode, and will show the road ahead without the need of programming a destination.

I use Waze. I used to use Navigon, which was bought by Garmin, and was excellent. But Garmin exited the mobile app market, and no longer sells either the Navigon or Garmin app. In the mean time, Waze has gotten MUCH better than it was when I first tested it and choose Navigon.

The navigation apps have gotten WAY cheaper than they once were!

Whenever you open Maps, it always shows your location as a blue dot. The streets and street names are visible too.

You can also have Maps show you just the map, no destination needed, in CarPlay mode. Think the same thing holds true just for the application on an iPhone or iPad.

I've loaded Waze, so I now have Waze, iMap and Google maps available. Waze does what I want to accomplish - just show the road I'm on plus upcoming intersections, streets, etc. (Yeah, I did manufacture several trips so I could try things out.) Waze stays "on" for the duration of the trips I've taken so far today while the other two turn off when the iPhone times out. Additionally, Waze has the least cluttered screen of the three.

So, thanks for responding and for your suggestions. With your help, I tried different things and found one that works for me. Still, I'm intrigued by HERE WeGo, so I'll give that a look soon.
