Please, forgive me if this has been discussed before. I'm new here, I've been reading different threads, but I'm still confused ?‍♂️

Is there any way/patch to make my MP3,1 boot in High Sierra from an APFS SSD installed in the internal SATA bay? I see that there are different discussions about booting from an NVMe, but I can't understand if this will work also on SSDs on the internal SATA.

For now, I'm booting from an HFS formatted SSD, but I would prefer APFS formatting because it gives better read/write performance results.

Thank you in advance for your patience and support!

PS: for your info, I first installed HS on an HDD using @dosdude1 's patch, then I cloned the drive to SSD using CCC. Was this ok to do?

There is a (risky) apfs Firmware patch for the 3.1.

I wouldnt do it if thats my main machine.

DosDude has also an apfs driver you can use for apfs high sierra.

If your gpu has no uga bootscreen RefindPlus is a way to go, also delivering the apfs routines to start HS.

hmmm, I'm not that experienced to try "risky". It's not my main machine, but I would like to make it become my main mac for sound and light video editing. Trying now High Sierra to move on to Mojave later.

thank you, I'll look for it

There is a GOP Bootscreen for PC GPUs bootloaders like RefindPlus and OpenCore need and the native Apple (exactly UGA) Bootscreen what your 2600 has.

HURRAY! I just realized my mistake: instead of cloning High Sierra from my HFS+ drive, I should have installed it anew with @dosdude1 's installer ?‍♂️
As he clearly explains it in his HS installer page at point 6:

6. Select the disk or partition you want to install on, and erase it, ensuring to use either Mac OS Extended (Journaled), or APFS as the filesystem type. If formatting an entire drive, ensure GUID is selected.
-- Please note that if you use APFS, you will not have a bootable Recovery partition.
-- It is recommended that you only use APFS if the target drive is an SSD.
-- If you decide to use APFS, a custom booting method will be installed by the post-install tool, as the firmware of these unsupported machines does not natively support booting from APFS volumes. It is not quite as clean as native booting, but will not cause any issues while running High Sierra. A demo of the modified booting process can be viewed here.

Sorry, for asking useless questions not having done my homework!
