I want to upgrade my current 2k monitor (NEC LCD2690WUXI2) to a 4k one (EIZO CS2740) but need to make sure that my MP (5,1, 32GB, single hexcore, Mohave) can handle it smoothly. Connection would be displayport to displayport.

It looks like the basic RX560 should support 4K:

Yes, looks like the graphics hardware supports it. But what about the Apple AMD drivers in Mohave for this card?

I got the EIZO CS2740 today. Very uneventful hookup to the MP 5,1. Everything works and checks out. The Radeon RX560 handles the 2560x1440 @60Hz resolution well. Only noticeable performance impact is a rise in the expansion slot fan when playing video; audible but not too much from the MacPro case under my desk. No other performance impacts such as sluggish mouse or desktop animations.

Connected via Display Port. Initial boot into Mohave had default res at 1920x1080; changed to 2560x1440 and, voila, beautiful crisp text and spectacular color. The monitor and Mac OS system report 10-bit color. USB hub works; Color Navigator calibration software finds iDisplay Pro colorimeter and works flawlessly. Great screen uniformity and no faulty pixels. Excellent ergonomic stand. High quallity USB-C, USB-B and Display Port cables included. Calibration certificate included and "Made in Japan."

This monitor with 164 ppi may not qualify as retina, but I sure do not see any pixels from the approx 24-34 inches I sit from the monitor. But since my old NEC was only 89 ppi pretty easy to appreciate 164.

This is the kind of quality you expect and pay for with an EIZO. I highly recommend.

PS: In case anyone is interested this is a spectacular, detailed review of the EIZO CS2740 by a dealer in Australia: https://imagescience.com.au/blog/eizo-cs2740-evaluation

I actually downgraded from a 4K screen to a 1440p screen, as I was driving the 4K at the same resolution as you are.
Using a 27" 4K screen in 4K resolution on a Mac results in to small fonts, I'd go at least 32" when you want to actually use 4K.

This is my first time with a 4k screen and I can see that 2560x1440 is a bit too small for text for me (but many others like it). I switched to 2048x1152 which looks about right and is easier on the graphics card. Agree about the 32" but just too expensive and large. It would appear that 5k in 27" size is ideal but not really available and my old video card probably wouldn't drive it.

Did you not try any of the hIDPI modes before returning the 4k? I like the sharpness of the 4k and the HiDPI modes seem to give you the best of both sharpness and readable resolution.
