Hi,
Can my friend (who stays in US) buy an iphone for me and give it to me when he comes here in My country (Singapore)..without he getting monthly phone bills by AT&T. ? ..cause he is a little worried as he would need to supply his SSN (social security no.) to buy iphone.

Maybe by cancelling the agreement/Plan..how?

Thnx

I'm not sure the 3Gs is available without a contract (yet)? So he would be stuck with a contract, if he does decide to cancel it he'll probably have to pay until the end of the contract. So it'll be a VERY expensive undertaking...

Sorry for not being clear!

My friend will just buy the phone with contract for USD 199..and then he will give it to me when he comes here in singapore..then i will jailbreak and unlock it and use my carrier's local SIM here in singapore.

The phone will be used by *me* NOT by my friend. He will just buy it there in US using his *SSN*.

I do NOT want *him* to be billed by AT&T after purchasing the phone.
...maybe he will have to cancel the plan immediately after buying the phone..so that hes does not get billed.:confused:

You can't sign up for a contract, take the iPhone for the subsidised price and then just walk away from the contract without any early termination fees.

Wirelessly posted (BB 8900: BlackBerry8900/4.6.1.101 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/301)

The 199 is a subsidized price; you are required to sign up for a service plan before you can purchase the phone. In order to get it to you, it would have to go something like this:

1. Purchase phone and plan for 199 + plan cost for first month, roughly $100

2. Cancel plan after 30 days (durinng the first 30 days they require you to return the phone)

3 payt cancellation fee

So all in all, it is 199 phone + 100 first months bill + 200 cancellation fee = ~500$

But how can i walk away if they have my Social Security Number?? they will keep sending monthly bills at my address

simple.

iPhone 3GS = $199 for 16 GB, $299 for 32GB
Activation Fee = $35
1st Month = $70 plus applicable tax
Early Termination Fee = $175 - $5 for the first month = $170

Add it up. About $480 for a 16 GB, and $580 for the 32 GB.

This only works if your friend is willing to hold onto the iPhone for a full month, and then cancel the whole plan. Otherwise, he'd have to return the iPhone when he cancels before a full month.
