I'm thinking of buying doom3 for the mac. My question is will it run good on my imac. I tried postal 2 on it and the fps was horrible but I think this was because it was being emulated as it was designed for the older non-intel processors.

My imac:

1gb ram
20" screen
Radeon X1600
2.16 core duo

It should run very well, not "hundreds of fps" well but still pretty well.

I'm not sure, but would I be right to assume that the performance won't be too different?

The performance will differ a lot, windows is better for gaming. If I were you I would install it on windows, but it will run fine on mac os x too.

I tried to find a definitive thread on this issue, because I thought I remembered it being discussed at length... but my memory is also that most games tested run somewhat if not very much better on XP than Tiger on the same hardware.... optimization issues and so on... the amount of time people have spent developing for DirectX. Perhaps also because XP, being such an old OS, has relatively little overhead in comparison to Tiger. :D But in any event, it seems to be mostly accurate to say that games available in either flavor do better in Windows... if you can get a cheap copy of Windows to use with Bootcamp, it's probably a good investment for gaming.

Do you have any proof of that? People are always telling that to me, but don't even know why. I can't understand why the same game on similar hardware would run much better on XP than OSX.

ok well I installed bootcamp+windows and installed hitman blood money and was blown away by the performance.
I managed to have the resolution up high and all settings on full (including AA). So I think ill forget about mac based games.
