Can my unlocked iPhone get iOS 5?

I got my 3GS unlocked by a friend and it works great with my O2 sim card in the UK. I really want to update it to ios5 since I'm studying abroad in England and since my whole family has iphones in the States, I'd like to be able to message them. Can I update it? I really don't want it to be re-locked.

Depends on how it was unlocked. If it was jailbroken you're going to lose the jailbreak.
