Can nMacPro 6,1 Thunderbolt 2 use Thunderbolt 3 devices? If not. Why not fix the 2013 nMacPro so it is up to date rather than wait another 2 years a replacement. Thank USB for thinking of consumers.

TB 3 devices should be backward compatible with TB2 devices at a lower speed.USB is for consumers. Thunderbolt for pro's.

Thanks for the information. I was about to purchase a used 2013 Mac Pro and I decided to hold off. Unlike my existing cMP which has been upgraded to USB 3 and SATA via PCI. I can see making the switch to a nMP will be a bad investment while prices are still quite high and the long term investment looks not so good.
The Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt adapter lets you use all Thunderbolt 3 devices. The speed difference is not as much as one might think. The marketing materials all show Thunderbolt 2 (20Gbps) being half the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps). The reality is that Intel caps data transmission at 22Gbps for Thunderbolt 3. It's 16Gbps for Thunderbolt 2.
While I agree the nMP is expensive for what it offers, you can still replace CPU, RAM, SSD, and GPU. The way Apple is building new Macs indicates at the very least RAM and SSD will not be replaceable in the Mac Pro 7,1. The dual GPUs in nMP is proprietary but you can add eGPU.

Which enclosure would you recommend currently? I have a nMP trashcan with only the D300s, so a graphics update would be very much welcome.
The AKiTiO Node is my recommendation because it's available atm. Sonnet & Mantiz boxes will be available soon. Check out the eGPU buyers' guide for additional information.

Other than external storage I don't see a lot of Thunderbolt 2 or 3 devices I would need to be concerned with. Most plug-in devices I use like scanners and printers are still using plain USB. I may reconsider upgrading.

Unfortunately the Node is not available in Europe here. The ASUS ROG Station 2 is, so I might consider getting that one or would that be a bad purchase? Looking at the buyers guide they all appear to offer the same functionality when it comes down to it.
Projected release is first of may, I can have the Asus in home today. Should I wait then? I don't really care about the price difference.
For a nMP, you don't need all of the extra features the ASUS ROG Station 2 provides (100W power delivery and additional I/O). I would say to wait to the AKiTiO Node.
