Can no longer mirror MacBook to Apple TV with Big Sur after upgrade

After upgrading to Big Sur, I can no longer mirror my MacBook Pro to either of my television screens using either of my Apple TV's. I go into "Display Preferences", select my Apple TV in "Air Play Display" and it immediately reverts back to its default of "Off". About 15 seconds later I get a message that it "Could not connect to ..." This all worked just fine prior to Big Sur.

I can use Air Play to display from some applications like Quick Time where they have a specific Air Play option and my iOS devices still work, but nothing from the Mac Book. BTW, my son has the same problem and he lives elsewhere with a totally different network, etc.

I'm using Big Sur 11.1 and Apple TV 14.3

Help please.

Haven’t updated yet so can’t check mine (will tomorrow), but could be a case of tvOS needing an update. I don’t think it got updated today but I could be wrong.

I just updated it today with the 14.3 (18K561) version. I had hoped this would fix it, but it didn't.

Hmmm. Annoying if so. Sure it will be fixed but may hold back on big Sur update if it’s the case. Does iOS have a problem with it?

My iPhone and iPad work just fine. I used to use my MacBook to stream Safari content to my TV. Now I have use my iPhone.

A FIX

I spent three hours with Apple support yesterday and after ultimately being helped by an Apple TV specialist we found an unexpected and surprising work around of what is a bug in Big Sur.

In Apple TV change "Settings|AirPlay and HomeKit|Allow Access" to Everyone. Then turn "Require Password" to On. You'll have to create a password at this point.

The result is that on my system at least the Apple TV will NOT ask for a password, but it will let you mirror your MacBook screen to the TV via Apple TV. If I turn Password Required off, then I can no longer mirror. Weird.

The Apple support person thinks a bug in Big Sur is causing it to misread the password required flag from the Apple TV. We generated a diagnostic that he is sending to the Big Sur developers.

Just works for me, not had to do anything special.

I find that I can do it once and then not again until I reboot my Mac. Very annoying

just ran into same issue.

at first, was only happening with one of my two Apple TVs (2nd gen). contacted Apple Support, tried a Factory Reset on the device, no help, no solution other than to take into a shop for diagnosis. now, it's happening on my other one.

updated to Big Sur a month or two and had no problems whatsoever until a couple days ago. now BOTH the devices are screwed.

tried the trick of adding the password on the Apple TV, but that's not even working for me.

can still screen mirror to the half-working one from iPad and Macbook, though don't know for how long as was able to with the first until it completely disappeared from being detected.

beyond frustrating. :-(
