I know this sounds ridiculous but I’ve installed new RAM, and locked it in place with the two grey buttons at the side, and pushed down. That locks the RAM in. Then I try to put the silver RAM door on and it just won’t go on. I’ve been trying for nearly 40 mins. Can anyone help me?

Okay I’ve just taken all the RAM out - there’s actually no RAM in it now at all - and the door will still not close.

I'm beginning to suspect that you inserted the wrong memory modules in your iMac. Are you sure you purchased the correct memory?

Your 2020 iMac uses:

Memory Slots4 - 260-pin PC4-21333 (2666 MHz) DDR4 SO-DIMM

Is that what you purchased and inserted?

In any event if you can't remove the memory you put in and the door won't close, you probably need to make an appointment with Apple and have them look at it. Do not try to force anything as that may cause damage.

Okay, I was writing the reply above at the same time you were answering. Ignore that reply. But.... you probably still need to make an appointment with Apple and see about getting that door taken care of.

Okay, but will this little tinkering I’ve done void my warranty? I can see someone else on this forum had exactly the same problem

Already seen that thread and taken the advice :(

Edit: the cage closes inside. It’s the silver square you put on the back of the Mac that won’t go on

No, it shouldn't void your warranty. Replacing memory modules yourself on a 27" iMac is not something that would void the warranty. It sounds like that door may be warped or something like that. Anyway, that's not your fault and Apple should repair or replace it for you.

The issue is every Apple store is closed in my country, likely until March earliest because of the pandemic. Should I try to return it and then buy it again?

If you are within the return period and can return it without too much trouble, that might be the best thing to do. You should contact Apple Support first. I've shipped a 27" iMac before and I know that getting it boxed up in the original packaging is not easy.

Most Apple stores here in the US are likewise either closed or have restricted access.

Due to the way the springs are angled, there is a lot more friction in pressing the cover on than in taking it off. It requires a fairly firm push after making sure it is aligned properly. Unfortunately it is difficult to describe the difference between a firm push and too much force.
Try rubbing the surface of the springs and the perimeter of the opening with your fingers first, to slightly lubricate it with your skin oils.
