Can not permanently delete jpegs on PB

I've been deleting some desktops I had downloaded and now, whenever I try to empty my trash, I get an error telling me the files are in use. Its happened several times over the past few days and basically, I have to shut down my PB or log out to get them to delete on the next try when I log back in. Any ideas?

Another thing is, I tried running "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility and it couldnt verify my "Macintosh HD" (my hard drive). It told me it needed repair. Am I in sh*t?

I posted this in your other thread, though I'm not sure you'll be checking that one now that it is locked, so here is my take:

Did you try running the disk repair tool? It sounds like a file system problem...try using the repair feature in Disk Utility and maybe repair permissions. Also, try making another admin account to see if things still don't work in that account.

Thanks, I'm going to try that. I didnt proceed with the repair because I was just freaked out.

I'd use fsck rather than the OS install disks personally because it's kept up-to-date.

Did you happen to have these files open with Preview prior to deleting them? I have found if you open a picture with Preview, and then try deleting them afterwards, Preview will keep the image files locked so they can't be deleted, giving the same message that you are receiving. If this is the case, you can just quit Preview before emptying the trash and then the files will be unlocked and deletable.

if you're an Adium user, it has a bug where files sent won't be properly closed after the transfer is complete, so you have to quit Adium before you can do that.

Well, I didnt have the guts to go ahead and do a disk repair. I mean, what if its broken? What am I supposed to do? Its working fine right now and I dont wanna y'know, sort of like fix something that isnt 'broken'... I'm going to try to get an external drive and backup my stuff before I do anything. Fair enough but fsck really won't do any damage. Granted, it looks like a reasonably messy process though.

I type rm followed by a space, and then drag the offending file onto the terminal window (it will then add the command line information showing the path of the file). I hit return and the file disappears from the trash can.

Someone may want to tell me if that's harmful in any way, but it works wonders for me when files become stubborn.

Put them all in the trash, then go to the Finder menu --> Secure Empty Trash.
