Can 'Numbers' be opened by non-users?

I just purchased a new iMac, but my 2004 version of excel is not compatible with Lion. I was told Numbers is the best alternative, but before I purchase it I need to know if other excel and PC users will be able to open my Numbers formatted documents. Help?

You can export Numbers files as Excel files. File-->Export. You can also export as CSV files that can be open by a wide variety of software over many platforms.

You can also open Microsoft Excel files in Numbers and save your Numbers spreadsheets as Excel files.

If you need to send Windows users Excel spreadsheets, I would not recommend Numbers. Yes it has a conversion export option, but unless you have simple one table spreadsheets the conversion is pretty horrible. More information can be found here.
