Crap. Ordered a 3G iPad as a backup in case they ended up being hard to get today at 5pm. And it just shipped. I don't want to wait until Tuesday to play with this thing!

Anyone ever tried returning an online order to a physical Apple Store? IOW, can I return my 2nd still-sealed iPad when it shows up next week?

It's only a few days. Have you already acquired a 3G from a store? If not, you may find that they are harder to come by than you think. Some still couldn't get a wifi iPad weeks after launch.

yes, within 14 days from shipping or receipt (i forget which) unopened with 0 problems.

I ordered an apple case and Bluetooth keyboard online and returned it to the store with no. They actually gave me cash back for some reason.

Absolutely. You can always call the Apple store to make sure but there are several reasons I think you will have no problem:

1 - The iPad is in hot demand. A sealed unit will sell within minutes at an Apple store, perhaps longer at other retailers.

2 - I have bought things online and asked about returning them and was told it was ok, but I never wound up taking them back.

3 - Apple would rather have another unit they can sell quickly than waste that inventory sitting somewhere at fedex or ups being returned for a refund.

4 - Let's assume for some reason you get told "no." If you don't get the answer you want, talk to someone else. Leave and come back. Go to a different Apple store. Apple geniuses are not all reading from the same script when it comes to areas such as return policy, repair versus abuse, etc. So don't accept a crap answer, speak to someone else.

Thanks folks! I also looked into UPS ground shipping in case I have to return it that way. Looks like it's 12 bucks. If it comes down to it, I'll just consider that my rental fee for the next 4 days. :)

I have returned online stuff to the B&M stores. It seems to up to the manager but generally as long as it's a portable product (i.e., not a monitor, MP, or iMac) and made by Apple (i.e., not 3rd party accessories) they'll take it back no prob.

Yeah, I checked and saw this...

Shipped/Billed On: 05/01/2010 Product: WORLD EASE Type: Package Service: EXPRESS Weight: 1.50 Kgs

...now correct me if wrong but you will get a receipt if you get one in store before the delivery one. Well, why couldn't you use the store receipt on the new ipad that was shipped?
I thinking about heading out to an apple with that thought in mind.

How did this work out for you?

I ended up getting one in store on Friday. Today the one I order from the website, on the 20th, was delivered today.
Has anyone in the same boat had any problems returning their online ipad in place of the second they bought in store?

Sorry I can't add a valid data point to this -- I ended up selling my extra one to a co-worker.

That's cool...I had no problem returning it at the Apple store.
Not surprised since the store has been completely sold out of ALL iPad's for a while.

I ordered an iPad on May the 4th, and the delivery window says May 12-18 and the order hasn't shipped as yet.

If, at all, there's an issue with the iPad ie. Dead/stuck pixels/uneven lighting/something grossly wrong, would I be able to take it to an Apple store for a swap? Are swap models (white boxed) available with them even if they're out of retail boxed ones?

I'm in Pittsburgh, PA, if that helps.

You can return in-store. I had to exchange mine today because it had a dead pixel in the middle of the screen, but web orders can be returned/exchanged in store. However if you are returning it you might be subject to the restocking fee... that's probably regardless if you return it in store or ship it back.

That was my experience as well. I did an exchange using an online order in the store.

Did they charge you a restocking fee?

I don't see why, as I'm not returning the product, but getting a replacement for a faulty one.
