Hi guys! My iBook dual USB broke and I was thinkging of getting a Powerbook. I was wondering if I could run Panther on a 333mhz Powerbook Lombard? And if I can, how fast would it go? Lets say I have 256mb of ram. Thanks.

Panther claims support for G3, G4 and G5, but says nothing about required processor speed. I'm actually interested to know if it will work, too.

They say specifically that you need built-in USB, which the Lombards have. It will run anywhere between okay and painful depending on what you expect or are used to. If you just want to do "the basics" (email, web, chat, word processing) then it will be adequate. I'd still try to max out the RAM though.
Panther will *NOT* install (unassisted) on a beige G3.
Hopefully the nice guys writing XPostFacto will release a version that allows Panther to work on beige's, but I tried, and it just won't install. It refuses to even try.
But, it works just fine on a 233MHz rev.b iMac. It's even a little faster than Jaguar. (Which means it's perfectly usable, as long as you have a supported video chip. You won't get Quartz Extreme, but as long as you have some kind of video acceleration, it's usable.)

I have a 233 AIO at work running 10.2.6. I don't particularly want to run Panther on it, but I'll still check to see if the installer will let it install.
Well just my luck because Mac of All Tades (the place where I a m getting the computer) just ran out of them.

sure enough, the installer told me that it couldn't install on my beige G3 even before it rebooted to start from CD. Now I will just have to wait for someone smarter than me to figure out a way.
And just my 2 cents, but on my G4/400, i really haven't seen any speed improvement as some have reported. I do still love the changes, definitely worth it.
