When running Parallels Desktop for Mac on a new intel iMac, can I read and write to an external firewire drive formatted with NTFS that is directly connected to the iMac? or will the iMac complain that it can't recognize the drive and prevent Parallels from using it?

FireWire, no. USB, yes. (You can have Parallels directly control USB devices, so that the copy of Windows inside Parallels sees it as a USB device, not a drive volume. So then Windows inside Parallels mounts it exactly the same as a 'native' Windows computer would. Whereas Parallels doesn't 'pass-through' FireWire devices, so you could only have Windows-inside-Parallels see a FireWire drive if it would mount in the Mac OS. Which means that you can READ FireWire NTFS volumes, but not write to them, since the Mac OS can read them, but not write to them.)

Thanks for the explanation. I'm in luck because my external is actually dual-interface so I will be able to hook it up via USB. I tend to use firewire for the speed, but also the convenience of being powered by the cable (it's a 2.5" drive).
