Good Morning Mac Community,

Bit of an add question here, but I could do with some technical advice.

Does anyone know whether photos can reappear back in Finder long after they were apparently deleted?

I just found some very suspicious and "end of marriage" type photographs on my husband's Macbook Pro - they were in a random folder in Finder and I checked what date they were added to the computer and it was in the last few months.

Of course my husband says he downloaded these photos long before he met me and doesn't know how they got there as he thought he deleted them....

How can this be true from a technical standpoint? I was aware that once you deleted something from the trash can, they are gone forever?

Any advice would be appreciated.

From a troubled wife.

They won't magically reappear if that's what your being told.

I can see it if he's technically challenged. I come across people all the time with many years worth of files in their Trash and Recycle Bin. Because they think deleting a file removes it. They don't know they then have to delete the Recylce Bin or Trash. Anything in the Recycle Bin or Trash can be restored.

Another possibility. It was put in the Trash then accidentally restored before Emptying the Trash. He never caught the blunder.

Files accidentally restored from Time Machine backup.

I can't imagine anything my wife could download that would end our marriage, and I have a good imagination. What would be more serious would be if I found she had been snooping around my computer.

There is no absolute way to tell when a file was really created.

Metadata can always be deciving and manipulated.

You know you made a huge mistake when you marry someone who would divorce you over a download.

Most likely they didn't accidentally come back, although there is a slight chance that if he thought he deleted them but never emptied the trash they could have gotten copied back over, or possibly restored from a backup.

If you are that worried give him the benefit of the doubt, but to be more secure in the future go to marriage counseling and try to work things out.

Porn (I'm assuming that is what the OP is referring to) isn't that different from cheating, and I would expect my wife to divorce me if I was using it and she found out. Plus there is no need for it in a healthy marriage.

I don't watch porn and I think porn is bad, but a nobody in their right mind should marry a woman who would divorce them over porn.

That's like saying masturbation is grounds for divorce. Or looking at a woman. Every man masturbates, whether to the images in his head or on his screen.

I don't know if you're just talking from an idealistic imaginary perspective or are married yourself, but as an adult and parent I know that attempting to do to your family the equivalent of Apple's walled garden will not end in happiness and respect, only resentment and rebellion.

I remember when Miss Russia was asked by one of the Miss Universe judges whether beauty contests were demeaning or irrelevant in this day and age. After a few words in her limited English, she simply said everyone must love women, earning a standing ovation and the crown.

I guess I was lucky I wasn't married so I was allowed to watch it.
