Certain websites are unusable today. The main page will appear but A new page will overlay the original and I can’t get rid of it. It’s happening on multiple sites. I’ve attached a screenshot of what happens on the thinkbroadband speed test site just as an example. I’d appreciate some help. Thanks.

Thanks so much for your quick response. I realised about ten minutes after I posted this thread what had happened. It had only taken me about an hour to work it out. ??‍♀️
I feel like an idiot. A lesson learned I guess.

To answer your original question. It is possible to get a virus on an apple mobile product through a web browser but it is rare. Most of the threats also do not survive a restart due to Apple's walled garden approach. Same as to why most modern jailbreaks are "Semi-Tethered." They also cannot survive a restart for the same reason.

Yeah agree with @Samdh90 … viruses in the traditional sense are not going to be a problem on your iPad.
However, there have been (and likely are still) zero-day exploit chains that can compromise your device via the browser. The difference with those is, you wouldn’t notice.
The “good” news is, these 0days seem to specifically target certain regional/ethic groups, rather then being randomly spewed all over the internet. So it’s possible, just unlikely.
