Can someone explain how the Push works (technical)?

Hi

Can someone explain the technology behind the "push" in mobile me? We will be having two iphones.

1) Will we need a family plan?
2) What happens when each iphone user updates their calendars and contacts?
3) How is the data pushed and from where?
4) Will we be able to retain our e-mail addresses and how are they used in the Push?
5) How is AT&T network involved?

1. No, but it is cheaper then 2 individual plans.

2. Each MobileMe account is separate. However., yoiu can point to the same account if you want to share.

3. A notification is sent from the mm servers and the iPhone retrieves the data from the mm servers.

4. You will get new userid@me.com email address's. Normally you forward old email there.

5. AT&T is the data network if not using wifi.

Push is part of mobileme, when it comes to memail, calendar, contacts and bookmarks.
Push for email on yahoo is part of your yahoo account.
Push app notifications... don't exist

Anyway, MobileMe is not a part of your AT&T contract, it is separate and costs $99 per year.

Why do people keep calling this push??? Its not push. RIM has push, apple has request.

All your phone does it opens a connection with the MM server and sits there and waits for it to send stuff. This connection stays open for 15 minutes, and then reopens after that.

Push doesnt drain battery constantly. Apples "push request" crap does. Which might be why we dont have push services in iphone yet!

I call it push because Apple does. I am not saying you are wrong but do you have any backup evidence to your description of how Apple Push works?

People are always saying that Apples push drains the battery like crap .... i've had mobileme on my iphone 3g since it launched and if i am not pounding on games like crazy i can easily get a couple of days standby out of the phone.

I've not noticed any problems with having this or Loc services on
