An alpha channel is a way to make part of the image transparent by masking the part of the image you want to make invisible.

In Photoshop, creating an Alpha Channel is as easy as selecting the part of the object you want to see and using the Save selection as channel option in the Channels palette. In Preview, you can use the Instant Alpha tool (hold down the Select button in the tool bar and choose it from the drop-down).
