i have an iPhone 8 and plan to stay on iOS 11.1.2 for life to avoid the iPhone slowing down feature.

But I see things like Spectre or something and how it’s unsafe.

Well what’s the real world risk?

Like am I really unsafe not updating in the real world?

Like what could happen?

It’s not like I’m hanging out with hacking communities or jail breaking my iPhone

If a new bug, hack, exploit, etc is discovered and patch your device would be vulnerable to attack / infection etc. on top of missing any features, enhancements and updates that inevitably will added through software updates

Why not get 11.2.2? I don't believe the throttling has been added to it yet.

Yeah, it's safe to update to 11.2.2. I got my Iphone 8 Jan 4th and it came w/ 11.1.2. I updated to 11.2.2 -> no throttling and the phone got better with performance (according to GB4: single C +32 points, multi C +98 points ).

But this is something that we iP8 and X owners must keep watchfull eye on: every single time that Apple updates iOS -> are we throttling now? When comes the golden hour of stopping updating our devices? we are the "lucky ones" 'cos we got a heads up... :/

A real risk for staying on 11.2.2 for life is unless you are at least 80 or in failing health the iOS won't be well supported ( or even remembered) in your later life.

I decided to stay on my for life and don't suffer any new bugs.

1. Potential security exposures.

2. Apps that won't update/loss of app functionality and features

3. Apps that won't install because they require a higher iOS version.

I ran a 4S for many years as a deep backup. It got really, really annoying. It's doable, but recognize that after some point you're locked in amber like that mosquito in Jurassic Park.

The alternate method to updating iOS, yet continue to avoid that "slowdown feature", would happen if you would simply keep an eye on your battery condition. That, at the moment, is where the slowdown is targeted, and you would replace your battery when needed.

You are also assuming that Apple does not modify the throttling feature. Apple might in iOS 12 add another option under Battery to allow the user to disable throttling when battery condition has deteriorated (be on by default).

Too early to be stressing about this, imo. And as DeltaMac points out, battery in bad shape, replace.

People...you do realize the slowdowns only happen when the battery starts losing its capacity...if u have an app like Battery Life and just keep an eye on it once or twice every few months, you shouldn’t have an issue with slowdowns. If you notice it or the app shows battery capacity is getting low, go to Apple store and get the battery replaced for cryin out loud.. my ip6s+ is 1.5 years old and still has 92% capacity.. should be good for at least another 1.5...and I always run latest updates for security improvements..but yeah, Apple should give the user a selectable option on throttling if they’re gonna continue to do that..

Totally agree - waaaaay too early.

I have 2 iPhone SEs, a 6S+ and a 7+ that are all on 11.1.2. I'm waiting for the JB to get substrate. Plus, I don't want to upgrade the 7+because of the throttle thing. My 7+ is less then two months old so I wouldn't have to worry about that for awhile but I still want to jailbreak it.

If? Don’t you mean when?

I’d trade the limited potential for reduced performance of an essentially consumable and disposable device for greater security any day.

iOS 11.1.2 is really buggy and has a date bug which can crash your entire device. Not recommended.

I think the OP is worrying for nothing.

The other thing that I should have pointed out above is this:

- other Apple hardware requirements

Example from real life: I was going to keep my iPhone 7 on iOS 10. But I discovered that the Apple Watch Series 3 is a seriously great health and fitness tool, and that requires iOS 11. Ooops - time to change my plans and upgrade. Honestly, if I decide I want to use the Watch, I'm not going to drive iOS 10 through my foot like a stake.

This is silly. If your phone would have been subjected to slowing down due to a dying battery iOS without the slowdown feature would just crash. Neither is a good place to be, at least the slow down feature buys you a bit of time.

Without updates your phone will become easier and easier to attack over time and software will stop working on it. Will you ever be hacked? Honestly, on iOS the odds aren’t super high but it is a constant risk.

I work in the security field. It isn’t tenable for me to run unpached software.
