Can someone recommend a DVI to HDMI cord?

My main television is HDMI compliant, but I'm going to be staying with family in a few weeks and they only have a DVI enabled TV. The TV says DVI-D under the DVI port and where the DVI port and audio ports are circled it says HDCP. Not really sure what either of those mean, I've heard DVI alone doesn't carry audio so will I need an HDCP cord?

Can anyone recommend a DVI to HDMI cord that will carry both audio and video? Thanks.

Monoprice has them dirt cheap. Good cables too.

DVI only carries video, so you also need a miniplug to RCA to carry the sound from your MBP to the TV.

Get the Apple mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and a DVI cable as well as the miniplug to RCA for sound and you are set.

Wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose of bringing my ATV then? I might as well just use my MBP and stream it directly from there, especially since the videos I have been playing are actually from an App on my iPhone - not on the MBP (though I can get them on there if I wanted) that are streaming through airplay.

Is there really no way to connect an ATV to DVI and to get sound, independently? Either way, thanks for the reply! I'll look into those options.

HDCP = High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection - really google isn't that hard to use.
It's to prevent people from copying digital files.
not a type of cord.

if they have a stereo with an extra optical in, you could use that.


there is no cheap way to get optical audio to analog, here's a box for $50 that will do it

This thread is really confusing, you never said 'ATV' in your first post, so emaja was talking about MBP > TV.

MBP to TV is definitely easier, just get a MDP to DVI adaptor and a DVI lead, along with a phono (standard headphone jac) to phono or RCA (white and red plugs) depending on the inputs on the TV.

Apple really screwed up with their display interconnects. Instead of providing a single stable option or a wide variety of options, they force customers to upgrade to the newer tech.

Sure that's okay. But then they upgrade again and again.

DVI, then miniDVI, then microDVI then MiniDP and now Thunderbolt. Seriously, they need to stop this madness.

What is more frustrating is the fact that all these standards are electrically compatible. So it is not like you are getting a significantly better standard. They are all pretty much the same. But you have to spend $$$ on adapters.

Anyway, back to the OP's problem:

Optical out is pretty much the only thing you can do. Get a HDMI to DVI cable from monoprice for the video. Then an Optical to optical for the audio (assuming your TV has an optical in). The TV might have the RCA digital in. Though, I am not sure if there is an optical -> digital RCA adapter available.

Mini DP = Thunderbolt. I fail to see the problem.
