Can someone schools me about why Sparrow app can have push email?

So i was just wondering why it is so hard for Sparrow to have push email, but on the other hand my gmail app is working with push email all day!

And I don't get the we will get push with or without Apple? What does that supposed to mean when other apps can get push without any issue and with Apple as well!

Ps: i just read something about them charging people annually for push email! Really!?

If i'm not mistaken the reason why you get gmail is because the email is running through google servers and not through Apple servers which is not allowed. Sparrow would have to have everything run through their servers to be allowed to have emails pushed.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong

I see! So that mean they release a half made app with a broke status cuz servers cost? But sparrow on mac works fine with push! Are they using their own server on mac? Is it the same concept as an ios app or totally different?

The rules might be different of OSX and iOS. Again, don't quote me on all of this!

Servers don't just cost money, they add an additional layer of complexity, unreliability and security concerns.

Do you REALLY want ALL of your email running through a third party? That's a huge security problem and it means that if their servers go down, then you can't find out about new emails (without manually checking).

It would be far cheaper and more reliable to NOT use push, but Apple leaves developers no choice.

It makes more sense for Gmail to do it, purely because they're the mail provider as well - it's less unreliable and not as much of a security concern.

But sparrow on mac works fine with push! Are they using their own server on mac? Is it the same concept as an ios app or totally different?

They don't need to use Push Notifications on Mac OS because there aren't any restrictions on multitasking.

iOS has a lot of restrictions that mean developers can't do things that you could do on a desktop computer (running Mac OS X, Windows or Linux).

It's totally different.

If every app could keep a data connection open you'd run through your phone's battery in two hours. So Apple limit what background apps can do. They can keep connections open while you use the app in the foreground (of course), and for up to ten minutes afterwards if needed (to continue an upload for instance.) Other than that, it needs to use the apple push notification servers. This would require their servers (which can run continuously of course) to check your e-mail and then send a message through the push notification service. This is a bad idea for many reasons.


On the Mac, no such limitation exists. Nor is one necessary, of course, so the app can just run in the background and keep as many connections open as it wants.

Ok i get ya, but what other apps that do the samething and can still get it to work right without any sec issue concern right?! Why would sparrow charge for push? I rather use the stock mail app, but gmail stop push email for some reason! Gmail stop push on mail stock is that because google release their own gmail app?

I don't think there are that many push notification based mail clients on iOS.

Simply because it costs them money to offer. It's a continual charge for them to be able to supply the service. If for any reason they can't continue to offer it, then you stop paying.

Google has not stopped push email through Exchange ActiveSync. I suggest that you try setting it up again:

Google email use to have push without setting it up as Exchange! I don't want to set it up as exchange because I had very bad battery issue with that type of set up.
