Can someone tell me if this is "The Whine"?

I've only just noticed it and it only does it sometimes, but could my MBP be suffering from the dreaded Whine?

It's the dead of night here so I can't here anything other than the sound of my MBP, so now's a better time to notice it, but I think I could probably hear it at normal times.

In the following sound, the first thing you'll hear is the sound with the mains cord plugged in. After the 'pop' you'll hear it with the cord unplugged (running of battery) and this is when the whine seems loudest. After that you'll hear another pop and then after a small delay, the whine goes quieter again.

IS THIS THE WHINE?

All I hear is a click on your audio download.

The whine is just that.. a really high-pitched whhhhiiiiiiiinnnnnnnneeeeeeee noise, similar to high intensity fluorescent lights.. or a TV's whine.

Sounds like VERY faint feedback? It basically gets louder if I unplug the laptop from the mains. I can hear it right now and it keeps on making me think I have tinnitus!

If you run MagicNoiseKiller and you stop hearing whatever you're hearing, it was probably the whine.

Then that's probably it.. it does sound like the ringing in the ears of tinnitus.

okay, when I open the Mirror widget, the sound goes away. Is this something wrong with only certain MBPs? Or is it something that if I ask for a different one will give me the same sound?

There's been a lot of debate on this. I've got an interesting story that I've been sharing recently, although I'm not certain it will help.

When I got my MBP, it had the whine. Two weeks later (about 5 days ago) my adapter went bad on me - which at the time I thought was a serious stroke of bad luck. However, after replacing the adapter, the whine is no longer present, and I don't run any of the hacks or whine-eliminating applications. Quite odd.

So what does this mean? Maybe nothing. Maybe some MBs and MBPs ship with an adapter that is somehow responsible for "shutting down" the whine. I don't know. All I know is I have a new adapter and no whine.

As a note, when my old one went bad, I had to go through my IT department to get a new one. Since I couldn't wait for that, I went to the Apple Store to buy one. So when I get back to the office on Friday, I should have a second adapter with which I can test the whine.

Hmmm.

I was going to get a second adapter for when it's sat on the desk at home anyway...

I shall investigate further too (this saturday)...
