I miss being jailbroken and the only reason I haven't is I mess up everytime.

Currently have ios 7.0.4

The thing is I wanna keep my pictures and texts on my phone.

How do I do this?

In the past I make a backup and then restore to the new ios version however doing this writes over my backup. Then I'm SOL. What am I doing wrong?

If you're not currently jailbroken, you could just do an over-the-air update (under settings) to 7.1.2, backup the phone using iTunes, then jailbreak with Pangu. You shouldn't lose any of the data on your phone that way.

1.back up your phone JUST IN CASE.

2.Update to the recent IOS Version (it IS jailbreak-able)

Make sure to update through iTunes as OTA updates tend to not be friendly with jailbreaks at times.

3.Download and install The latest version of Pangu.

4.Plug in your phone

5.Hit "Jailbreak"

6.Do As Pangu Tells You (just asks you to change date on your device then to click on the newly installed pangu icon)

then voila you are jailbroken and should still have all your photos/texts/everything else;)

If you want to stay on 7.0.4- Download evasi0n7 and hit jailbreak and follow the instructions

If you want 7.1.2- Go to iTunes, hit Backup, then Restore. After the process, hit Restore from Backup. Then go to Pangu, hit jailbreak and follow the instructions

Can you take screens of where these buttons all are? Like I said for some reason I must hit the wrong things because when I restore (update) it creates a new backup that is clean.

From what is sounds like is your computer either doesn't have any of your stuff or it's not authorized.

On the top menu bar depending on if your have a Mac (it's on the top of the screen) or if you have Windows, (it's the top most line File | Edit| View, etc. [press Alt on your keyboard if you don't see it]): View—>Show Sidebar; plug your phone in if you have not already. Now go to Store—>Authorize this computer…; this will let your computer download and update your apps and music.

Next on the left hand sidebar you will see your phone. Right click on it and there is an option to 'Transfer Purchases.' Do this and it will transfer all your apps, music, videos, whatever you bought on iTunes or the App Store. It however does not backup your music if you did not buy it from Apple. If you got your music another way, you need to manually add it to iTunes.

In the same side bar, left click on your phone to select it and you will see it in the main window. The there are three sections: Status, Backups, Options. In the middle section choose the checkbox that says 'Encrypt iPhone backup' and choose a good password. You can save it to your computer if you want. The reason to encrypt is (1) people don't see your backup without your password, and (2) it saves all your passwords like for email accounts. If you were not encrypting before it should start backing up your phone again. You can let this finish. Just to be safe after this process is done hit the big button in the middle that says 'Back Up Now.'

Now that you're backed up you need to disable 'Find My iPhone.' This option is in Settings—>iCloud—>Find My iPhone. If the toggle switch is green you need to click it (it will ask your iCloud password [not the backup password you created earlier]); if it's not green, you are done (don't enable it yet).

On the top section in the status section, there is a thumbnail of your device, your phone's name, charge status, capacity, etc. on the right side of that you see two big buttons, click the right most one that reads 'Restore iPhone…'

Go through all the steps, and when it ask if you want to back up your phone, select 'Do Not Back Up' and continue. This process may take a while depending on if you have already downloaded iOS 7.1.2 before or not and how fast your Internet connection is. Have some patience.

After this process is completed you will have a blank phone. It will ask you to restore. You choose one of the options that says to 'Restore from my computer' and choose the backup we did earlier. If you chose a password and didn't save it on your computer, it will ask you to input it here. If it's wrong the process will start and then say the password is wrong. It does not tell your the password is wrong immediately if it is.

Wait for the process to complete, including the sync process that installs your apps and stuff.

Now when this is all done and you've gone through all the processes on your phone and you can see the home screen, you are ready to jailbreak.

doing ota's will ruin the jailbreak install 99% of the time which is why it instructs you not to update ota

Are you talking about an OTA update on top of a jailbreak? I jailbroke 4 devices with Pangu, all of which had been OTA updated (but not previously jailbroken), and all went fine. Perhaps I'm just lucky in your 1%. Thanks for your concern though bahaha.

before doing the jailbreak. well i don't have 7.1 so idk about pangu but with evasion it's stated in the instructions not to update ios ota

Thanks for backing me up, King. Too many people out there spouting incorrect information about jailbreaking. No wonder so many people are afraid of doing it.

my statement was towards evasion, which is true, so really i'm not "sprouting incorrect information"

Lol, sure.

P.S. In my original post, which you quoted and stated that I was wrong for jailbreaking an OTA update, I mentioned that I was using Pangu. So there!

although he was incorrect in terms of the PanGu jailbreak, this was most likely due to the early half of iOS 7 being that you could not jailbreak an OTA device, or had a very slim chance of doing so

Despite that, even during the iOS 5 days, many recommended restoring in iTunes and not updating via OTA because updating via OTA would change the RAMdisk and therefore, make SHSH blobs useless (with the APTicket bug in iOS 5)

So that technically could make it at least 2 years of people heavily recommending restoring in iTunes as opposed to updating via OTA before jailbreaking (if you include iOS 6 as well)

not saying he was giving correct information, just that I believe you're a little too harsh on his attempt to help. Although, it's hard to tell tone across the internet so I might have just been interpreting the tone of voice incorrectly

Bah, no need for anyone to be upset...

Just that there are 3 posts from two different people claiming that I am in the wrong suggesting to jailbreak an OTA updated device, when I clearly mentioned that I am referring to Pangu. I have 4 devices, all OTA updated, all easily jailbroken with Pangu. Again, just making sure the correct information is being provided, particularly to folks like the OP who are new to jailbreaking.

And a smiley face to make sure everyone is warm and fuzzy :)

sorry if that came off as an upset response, did not intend to

If you're plugging your phone into the computer and using pangu to jailbreak, which uses iTunes, why would you even bother doing a ota update when you're already plugged in? Or am I missing something huge here#?

If you already updated your devices ota(as I did) prior to the jailbreak, there is no need to restore them again when using pangu.

None of my devices see itunes. I back them up with other methods. I only downloaded and used itunes for the jailbreak. Apple makes it easy to update your devices without iTunes.
