Can the 2014 Mac Mini with Iris drive Dell Ultrasharp 5k?

Ok, one more time: return mini 2014 and instead buy RiMac, save yourself $1K in the process. You do not need external monitor with RiMac it has 5K built-in. Nothing Apple makes can drive external 5K yet.
 
I don't want an external monitor, I want external video-input. If you're going to offer unhelpful advice, at least read the question you're attempting to answer.

So buy a second monitor..... You basically get the 5k monitor for free then buy use the money you would have on the mini for a decent HDMI monitor....

Based on your question, you have mini 2014 and trying to figure out if it would drive 5K monitor - the answer is - nope. Neither Mac mini have 5K video input nor any other mac. Even if somehow you would connect this dell monitor - no mac supports 5K on external monitor. If you referring to external monitor with video input, well it better have one:D Go ahead and buy Dell 5K monitor, it seems you want new toy anyway.

The Mac Mini has 2 thunderbolt ports, and can drive 2 monitors up to 2560x1600. The Dell works off 2 displayports, but what I don't know is how that works.

In an ideal situation, each port could drive half of the display. In that case it'd show up on your mac as 2 monitors - not the most ideal of things, but it works.

Again though, I'm not too sure.
 
No it wont not even a mac pro as of right now .You are not going to get true 4k and 5k quality .Only the imac retina can do 5k and 4k right now , If it was that easy apple would have released a 5k or 4k thunderbolt display .

Even though it would be possible to drive the 5K display on a low refresh rate (at about 25Hz) using Thunderbolt 2 SST, unfortunatelly the Intel Iris framebuffer does not support this resolution (it is maxed out at 4096). This is why you can't even set higher scaled resolutions on a 4K display connected to the 2014 mac mini or the 13" rMBP (currently only the 15" rMBP and Mac Pro can do that).

I think, you can get true 4K quality using an MBP 15" or Mac Pro just fine using MST or even SST with some newer monitors which support HBR2. Even 5K is possible, but not at 60Hz (using a single cable).

Maybe but I doubt it , I think the whole 4k and 5k thing is overated anyways , there just is not a lot of 4k or 5k content out there to begin with . Hopefully it will get cheaper like hdtvs . I would love to have a 5k monitor or tv but for now I am happy with my 1080p tv/monitor .

The current Mac Pro can use up to three 4k displays simultaneously, but no word on 5k. Technically, combining two Thunderbolt lanes to use at least one 5k display (and then one 4k display on the side) could work, it's sounds sort of hacky tho.

It's still a mystery why there isn't an Apple 4k Thunderbolt display yet, perhaps they're going straight for 5k.
