So recently I was converting my Mac Pro 5,1 into an atx compatible case, and I found one of the fans (The one to cool down the PSU) is literally impossible to remove, so I was just wondering if could use that fan with an atx compatible motherboard. I am aware that apple uses a sperate 4-pin layout but I am curious if someone had use those fans and plugged it into an atx motherboard before.
 
yes. that is a PWM type connector. +12, GND, PWM, and Sense/Tachometer. the model specific pin layout out you can google - there are plenty of projects/web sites, here is one which provides a quite nice overview.
