With the recent rumors regarding a Mac Pro refresh coming shortly, and the fact that there are no Sandy Bridge Xeons out yet, I'm guessing that it is quite possible that Apple could release a cheaper (and maybe smaller) single CPU Mac Pro using i7 Sandy Bridge CPUs.
But maybe I'm just dreaming. To me, it would make total sense for Apple's product line to include a "display-less iMac", where you could add a couple of HDs and and PCIe cards and switch out the GPU. In other words, a standard PC as we've always known them!

Sandy Bridge Xeon is out. (Xeon E-3 Quad Core only) but not Sandy Bridge-E Xeon (Xeon E5 4/6/8 Core Configuration).
Pretty sure they are going to keep a nice padding between the iMac and lowest end Mac Pro. Apple wants you to get an iMac and slowly the MP line is going to get more and more niche.
As a current MP owner this makes me sad but I understand that Apple is moving towards an iOS only future and that's just how it is.

One of the reasons I built my own system. It's obvious apple is pushing users to iMacs and iOS devices. Don't think we will ever see 8 real core Mac pro's under 2300 like the 2008 models. Hate to see how apple will ream folks wanting the new ones coming out.
I'm with you there. I expect Apple to make turn iOS into iOS Mobile and have like iOS something for their laptops and desktops.
It's looking like I may build my own system when its time for me to upgrade. All my work is in Maya and AE and I really need to get a Quadro card with good drivers. Unfortunately, those do not exist for Mac.
The 2.8GHz 8-core Mac Pro 3,1 was $2,799 new when it was a current model, actually. IIRC, $2,299 bought you the base model minus one CPU (making it a 2.8GHz quad). But back then, 8 real cores for under $3,000 was a bargain; and that would still be true today.
But I'm with you, I still don't think we'll ever see anything from Apple again that will match the bang-for-buck of the 2008 Mac Pros.
