I downloaded and installed the xvid for mac codec and I still get a black screen when I try to play an xvid video. Any ideas?

That might mean something as well. So anything with the proper Quicktime codecs will play in Front Row?
Yep. Frontrow just uses quicktime for movies, itunes for audio, iphoto for picture slideshows. Pretty simple integration.

Ah, I thought it was limited to basic Quicktime support and not plugins as well.

Anything that uses Quicktime as its video playback "device" will play anything your Quicktime Player app can play.

If it plays in QT fine, itll play in FR fine.

If it doesnt play in QT (like missing audio etc), but DOES play in VLC, FR will only play what QT plays.

itunes is acttually quicktme with more features and a different GUI
iphoto is driven by preview in the same way as qt driven itunes
front row is just another step off of iphoto and itunes.

to be picky, iTunes, iPhoto, QuickTime, Front Row and all those great apps are probably QTKit based..just, separate so the user doesn't have to deal with photo editing if all they want to do is listen to a few MP3s. ;)
