Can you connect a 2008 Mac Pro to a new LG Ultrafine 4K monitor?

Is it possible to connect a Dual link DVI output on an Early 2008 Mac Pro to the USB-C input on the newer monitors like this: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/HKMY2VC/A/lg-ultrafine-4k-display using an adapter? I've been trying to find an adapter but they all seem to go the other way around: from an older DVI monitor to a newer USB-C computer.

Nope, won't work. There are plenty of 4k displays that would work with an appropriate display card, but you'll need something other than dual-link DVI for those.

Ok, thanks. So the only way to get the signal transferring properly is to get a new video card for the Mac that has either a Mini DisplayPort or USB-C port?

This was the response I received from Plugable tech support after reviewing the "System requirements and compatible Mac models" listed in this Apple support article: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207447

"Looking at the manufacturer media for this product, this line stands out:

A Mac with built-in USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports is required; the display isn't compatible with Mac models that use Thunderbolt 2.​

Looks like this is native USB-C alt mode only, and you won't be able to use it with a machine that does not include that type of output.”

There's a Dual Link DVI to DisplayPort adapter but Dual Link DVI only works up to 2560x1600 60 Hz.

Once you have a DisplayPort signal, you can convert it to USB-C using the Moshi DisplayPort to USB cable. https://www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/HLR62ZM/A/moshi-usb-c-to-displayport-cable

You may want to add USB (for brightness and audio and USB ports of the display):

Or you can use a Sunix UPD2018 or Delock 89582 to convert DisplayPort to USB-C (DisplayPort alt mode and USB).

If you have a Mac with Thunderbolt 2, then you could connect a Thunderbolt 3 device that has two Thunderbolt 3 ports using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. Then the second Thunderbolt 3 port can be used with a USB-C display (DisplayPort alt mode and USB).

You could try using a GC-TITAN RIDGE to convert DisplayPort to either USB-C or Thunderbolt. It will give full USB 3.1 gen 2 speed (10 Gbps) unlike the Sunix and Delock which are limited to 4 Gbps in the Mac Pro.

Many thanks for posting all these options, but unfortunately I had already purchased an HDMI monitor and went straight from DVI out on the Mac Pro to HDMI in on the monitor. However, I couldn't find any of this info on the net before, so at least now others looking to do a similar hookup will be able to find several potential solutions.

I also bought a monitor that I’ll have to take back if that option doesn’t work.
