Jailbroken but not unlocked 3GS at 3.1.2
Can I do a restore and stay at 3.1.2 or will Apple say I have to upgrade?
So far so good, but you know a jailbroken iPhone can get fussy after a while. Just preplanning.

If you have saved your 3.1.2 SHSH (either on Saurik's server through Cydia or locally through Umbrella), then it is possible to restore to 3.1.2; otherwise, it is not. There are already several threads about this very issue on the first page of this thread.

go here to get 3.1.2, then shift-click restore.

You cannot restore a 3GS to anything but the latest 3.1.3 firmware unless its JB with an untethered JB or has its SHSH's saved thru cydia or locally.
What you suggested will not work so try not to give advice on something that you're not positive about.
What you suggested would work on a 2G and 3G model but not on 3GS units.

Damn, things are not so simple anymore :S

What is SHSH btw?

obvously

Apple is working harder to prevent jb and unlocking so we have to be way more careful! ;) I'm guessing it's gonna get worse! I hope 4.0 is awesome!

I would appreciate any help regarding the above issue. You menetioned "unless its JB with an untethered JB."

A freind has a 3gs that is untethered JB'ed with Redsnow and unlocked with Blackrain. SHSH is NOT saved through Cydia.

Now, his phone crashed. How can he restore it to 3.1.2?

Thanks a million.

If it was JB with an untethered JB then he can restore it thru itunes to official 3.1.2 and then JB it again with Redsnow and unlocked with blacksnow.

I would've guessed NO. But I'm not doubting your call... But do you mind explaining why? I would've thought he would have to go to 3.1.3, since there are no 3.1.2 SHSH's saved.

Could you just explain how he could go to an official 3.1.2?

When you have the old iboot untethered and your device is already JB it doesnt even check for the SHSH's thru Apple for verification.
It just lets you install it.
On the other hand if it was tethered it wouldnt be possible.

Alright. So if the phone is already pwned (lets say its on 3.1.3 jb), you can safely downgrade to a 3.1.2 custom fw IF its the old bootrom?

I wish I completely understood all this. I think I was unfortunate to upgrade to a 3gs at the same time apple stopped signing <3.1.3 fw's. So I've had to learn the difference between tethered/untethered jb's, SHSH's, etc... Baaaaaad timing on :apple:'s part ;)

Thanks for the explanation.

Thanks for the reply. We'll give it a try.

Well. It didn't work. I got the message that the phone is ineligible.
