Honestly like man other MBP users I am starting to have a lot of trouble. I was wondering, what are the chances that I can exchange a 15" MBP for a 17" MBP. (If it cost me $500 or so, its no problem)

Tonight, my machine started randomg shutting down while running off battery. This is just the newest problem. What sucks even more is that I can't send the machine back because I would basicly need to call out of work for the week. Which isn't going to happen. This is now my primary machine, I have sold all of my old Windows machine. (I am done with Windows)

I sent my 2.0ghz machine back after 2 months of ownership (it was at Apple Repair for 15 days within that time!). You have to have a very strong case. My MBP had serious issues and there was no way in hell I was going to settle for it and work around its issues. They are sending me a 17' in return of which I hope has no issues. I did have to add an extra 300 bucks.

You first need to call AppleCare. Have the low end guy put you directly to "upper management" so you can defend your case. Tell him of the problems you are having. Be polite, but be very firm. Tell him exactly what you want to do.

Good luck...

I recently did this with my year old iMac G5 (rev B). It was going in for its 4th repair and I was fed up with the unit.

Only I just sent a firm but sincere email to sjobs@apple.com attached with a BBB report I had opened. Apple responded within 12 hours (I sent the message in at 11 at night) and I was able to pickup an iMac Intel Core Duo at one of the local Apple Stores the next day.

No calling AppleCare (which I did have) or anything.

It certainly is nice that a company attempts to fix things and makes the customer feel happy. I have been in situations with other companies (*cough* HP *cough*) where this wasn't the case.

Its not gonna happen. I talked to 3 different reps and 2 managers today, and the end result is that since its the 2.16GHz its custom built. They will not exchange custom build machines for any reason.

Personally, I am pretty upset with this. I am going to see how things play out with the heat and the thermal paste. Which on an intresting side note, I was told that all the reports of people replacing thermal paste with a smaller amount are bogus and Apple has done its own testing. I will be calling on the 20th like others to ask those 3 questions.

I really love OS X, but I am not very happy with the machine right now.

your chances are nearly 0...however, you may get lucky if you try. i did.

when your speaking with apple customer relations...be professional and firm but polite when explaining your situation. don't demand anything the first call, they wont want to promise you anything without consulting the "higher up's" first. be sure you get a name, phone #, and extension to the person you were talking to.

good luck:)

Whoever told you that is either 5h1tting you or downright lying. There are users on pretty much every Mac-related forum reporting unqualified success. The thing to be aware of is that you risk your warranty, but only if you break something. Kind of catch 22, eh?

Surely if the thing is not working properly, they have to refund you by law? Then you can just buy the 17". That's the way it is here. In these situations I am polite but firm - I don't ask if a refund is possible, I just ask for a refund. The difference in emphasis may seem subtle but the difference in results is not. People always respond better when they think you know your rights. :)

The entire phone call was nothing but a run around. I am very stuck right now, in that I need a properly functioning machine and at the same time I need to send it back.

The do have a refund period, which is 14 days. *IF* I didn't have a custom machine, I would be able to work something out with them.

Now, this is where things get even better ...

After seeing the annoucement that they changed around the options on the 15" MBP. (No more 1.83GHz) I called up and explained that my system is no longer custom. I couldn't belive my ears when they said my system is build different then the stock 2.16GHz. (New one up today)

-1 more point for Apple hardware support.
