Can you get emails notifications without mail app being launched?

What I like the most about the message app is that if you get a new text it pop up in the notification sidebar even if the app isn't lunched.

Unfortunately it seems to me that this a missing feature of the mail app, aka in order to get new emails notification I need to have already lunched the mail app.


Or am I missing something?

Unfortunately that is not possible. You have to launch the Mail app for it to be able to give notifications.

You can make Mail one of the Login items and make it hidden. Then it will be available to notify you of arriving emails.

This is coming in Mavericks. It will give new Mail notifications even without the Mail client running.

So I installed Mavericks and this feature is seemingly still missing.
