I was on the last public beta and I think I had to get off of it because I could only install via OTA. Checking for updates in Finder would show it was up to date. I only have a few GB to play with so I'm not able to do OTA updates. I was hoping to get on iOS 18 on my 11 Pro but I don't think that'll happen. Or am I incorrect?

Sure you can, just check the instructions in the first post of this thread:

I downloaded Xcode and it's downloading the iOS stuff.

Would I still use this process for iOS pb 17.6? I'm a public beta tester, not a developer.

Yes, as IPSW files are the same for public beta testers and developers. It is just when you update OTA the developers’ betas come out first.

Where can I download the IPSW file though? I googled and got a lot of sites. I'm assuming I can't just download them from anywhere.

I'm guessing once I download it, it'll be picked up in Xcode to install?

The safest place to download it from is Apple, see the post #7.

Then you will be able to install it via iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac).

Perhaps reread the instructions from the post #2. 🖐️

I did read the instructions from post #2. I got hung up on "3. Hold down Option + Check for Update" part. I looked around, searched help, and I cannot find "Check for Update" anywhere. Maybe I'm missing it and it's right in front of me.

A couple of notes here:

  • what you are installing is the Developer Preview, not the “PB” (Public Beta). There is no Public Beta yet.
  • If you are having this much trouble, maybe it would be better to wait for the public beta, when you will be able to install it over the air
  • Not only is developer.Apple.com the safest place to get the iPSW file, it is the only place you should get it. Anywhere else and it may well be malware.

Here's the issue I'm running into... whenever I old down Option and click Check for Updates in Finder, I'm not getting a popup or browse box like I do in the linked websites. I'll restart my Mac after it finishes another backup.

As for your bullets...
  • I'm trying to install 17.6 public beta that came out yesterday. I was able to download 17.6 from the developer site.
  • I won't be able to download OTA since I only have about 2-3 GB of storage left on iPhone. It's really not that big of a deal, I was just hoping to give Apple some data from iOS 18 running on an 11 Pro. Even though most of my feedback or bug reports have been ignored, I believe I have had 1 or 2 over the years fixed with not many others reported.
  • Yes, I'll definitely get it from Apple.

Are you sure you won’t be able to install it OTA? Apple has (or had?) a feature that would offload data from your phone into iCloud temporarily to allow you to install updates that would take you over your storage limit. Perhaps they discontinued this or maybe it doesn’t work on betas. But unless one of those is true, I’d give it a try.

You are posting in the iOS 18forum, that’s why i assumed you were trying to get the iOS beta.

Good luck and keep posting here and we’ll keep trying to assist.

Ok. I restarted my Mac, hit Option and Check for Update and I was given the finder box to find the 17.6 IPSW.

Looks like there was some glitch from the recent update on macOS. It appears to be updating.

And my first report will be why Music is taking up 8 GB of storage with no music downloaded.
