I had some issues with the battery and got a replacement phone, which erased my jailbreak.
Surprisingly, the iPhone came with iPhone 3.0. I don't want to upgrade to 3.1 yet and but want to jailbreak again to 3.0.1. What should I do? All the instructions and YouTube videos say "Upgrade from iTunes to 3.0.1," but I can't do that now.
I tried hitting restore with pressing the ALT, but it says my phone's not eligible for it.
Any ideas? Thanks.

cool, thanks.
so reading this, looks like it's pretty much the same jailbreak method, except that I choose the 3.0.1 os file from redsnow rather than update from iTunes?

damn, didn't work.
Again, currently I'm on 3.0, trying to jailbreak to 3.0.1.
Any and all methods that I find tell me to update from iTunes to 3.0.1 and then use 3.0 ipsw file to redsnow.
Apple, I guess blocked users from upgrading to 3.0.1?

No I know its possible. I never bothered with it because its just a stupid SMS bug fix which affected 0.000% of the population. Its just a .1 added so who cares?

huh. that's what I'm thinking.
I do have 3GS and, somehow, Apple has blocked users to upgrade from 3.0 to 3.0.1.
It's either 3.1 or no upgrade.

Have you tried just jailbreaking 3.0 without updating to 3.0.1? The tutorial I'm looking at says that you can skip the "update to 3.0.1" step if you want to just jailbreak 3.0.

excuse me if im thread jacking, i dont mean to. I was doing some research and this is a related topic so i thought id get the same help here. Actually this thread answered, among others, whether i wanted to go to 3.1 or 3.0.1 and whether it was possible.

Ive been waiting since 2.2 for mms as my phone was working fine and i didnt 'need' any of the previous updates. I have a 3G jailbroken phone thats customised using cydia. I did previous research and jailbroke my phone myself twice following the simple steps that have been listed so i can follow instructions but im not software expert. I just want to be sure what ive learned so far is correct now that mms is available and i want to update. Im fine skipping 3.1 and though i dont need unlock id like to keep it open as an option so im gonna be going with redsnow jailbreak 3.0.1.

I want to keep my cydia apps and and if i remember correctly that i need a program (i forget the name, appbackup?) that will restore my cydia apps after i rejailbreak my phone. So am i correct that my steps are to back up my cydia apps and then follow the instructions from the link u provided above pointing to firmware 3.0.1 with redsnow and then use the backup program as well as checking my carrier update file?

Current version 2.2 jailbroken 3G
Step1-back up cydia apps
Step2-download redsnow and the 3.0.1 ipsw restore file
Step3-proceed with instructions on jailbreaking
Step4-check carrier file update

I just want to be sure what ive learned so far is correct now that mms is available and i want to update.

Well, if you want MMS, you need to upgrade to 3.1. Or, upgrade to 3.0 or 3.0.1 (doesn't matter which), and follow instructions given in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/792894/

And the Cydia app you are thinking of is AptBackUp. AppBackUp is for backing up apps from the official App Store. Confusing, I know!

woooops right after i wrote up my reply here i found a thread more precise.. 2.2 to 3.0.1. Anyway i thought there was a program to backup my apps that i downloaded on cydia. Damn, so i have to just manually redownload my apps after i jailbreak? Not a big deal just a time saver. Not worried about the Itunes apps cuz theyll be backedup from itunes. And im pretty sure i do the carrier update after i jailbreak right?

I better move this to the other thread.... Thanks so far!

Couldn't update 3.0 to 3.0.1
Jailbroke 3.0, also updated the carrier settings.
Jailbreaking apps work fine, MMS also works.
Happy enough.
Now have to wait for 3.1 jailbreak.

If you have a 3GS, it is *not* possible due to ECID checks.

I think that is correct. I have jailbroken many many times and am currently on exit to safe mode and it keeps going to safe mode no matter what. I can't fix it so I figured just jailbreak again. I went to iTunes shift + restore and selected 3.01. It extracts then says my phone is not eligable etc etc. Same thing happens with 3.0

I'm pretty much stuck on safe mode unless I decide to go to 3.1 without jailbreak.....
