I'm running into a problem, I'm trying to JB and upgrade my bro's iPhone 3G, it's already JB but he wants to upgrade to 3.1.2, he's currently on 3 something now..

So, I created a backup via iTunes as he doesn't want to lose his contacts, pictures, etc..

After the backup completed, I downloaded the 3g, 3.1.2 ipsw. Cooked it up in pwnagetool, did the whole JB process once the JB process completed.

iTunes opened up and asked if I wanted to set the phone up as new or restore from backup, so I chose to restore from the backup I had just created before the whole JB process.. but after the restore when the phone rebooted, it looked like it worked but Cydia would not work, kept saying "no internet connection detected" so then I noticed there was no 3g icon in the menu bar also the phone wouldn't make or accept calls... but if I put the phone on the wi-fi network I was able to use Cydia.

In the end I just ended up doing a restore through iTunes to 3.1.2 and the phone is in working order.

Is there anyway to JB then restore to get contacts, pics etc back on the phone or does the phone have to be set-up as new everytime you run a JB?

Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Sounds like you picked the wrong activation option when you were making your custom firmware. Go back and do the reverse of what you did the first time -- if you had checked activate before, uncheck it, if you didn't check it, check it.

Restoring from backup / setting up as new shouldn't affect whether or not your connection works.
