Can you just place 1 stick of 4gb ram along with the stock 2(2 gb) sticks?

I wanted to bump up the ram but was wondering if I would have any problems by just adding 1 extra stick of 4 gb for a total of 8gb(qty.2 2gb+qty1. 4 gb)
